Fly Fishing in Canada - Kamloops, City of 100 Lakes

There are several areas in the Kamloops region that offer lake systems ideal for a freshwater fly fishing vacation. These areas included both parks regulated by the provincial government and resort areas that are not officially designated as parks, but which nevertheless usually offer a wide range of camping and accommodation facilities for the fly fishing enthusiast.

Wells Gray Provincial Park: This sprawling park is located about an hour’s drive north of Kamloops along the Yellowhead Highway. The park incorporates several lakes as well as river systems such as the North Thompson and Coldwater Rivers. The park offers rustic camping facilities and great fishing year round.

Paul Lake: Paul Lake is just North of Kamloops, within a fifteen minute drive of the city center. This lake is stocked with fighting rainbow trout every year, every sport fishing enthusiast’s favorite opponent. The lake includes a provincial park with boat launches, camp sites and picnic areas.

Lac Le Jeune System: This lake system offers great fishing year round, as the population is bred within the system and not stocked. As a result, the trout here grow bigger than in other areas, averaging around three pounds. The system includes Walloper, Stake, and McConnell lakes. There is also a provincial park within the system, which means great facilities.

Tod Mountain: Known particularly for Sun Peaks Ski Resort, Tod Mountain also offers great recreation for the fly fishing enthusiast during months where snow is scarce. The mountain has several lakes, including Little and Big Heffley Lakes, and Little and Big McGillivary Lakes.

Thompson River: The North and South Thompson rivers meet in the middle of Kamloops, and both the separate rivers and their merged system offer fine fly fishing. Every year the Thompson sees the return of the steelhead run, and anglers from all over North America are keen to get in on the action that this species produces.

Kamloops has long capitalized on its advantages as a fly fishing paradise, with major tournaments held in lakes all over the region. If you are looking for world-class action, then try out the systems around the Interior’s best fishing city!
